hello members! haha, well, i've uploaded these three links. hopefully you guys are able to get it.
ahaha, well, the first one is a pretty joyous music. though not really very choir song, but i think we can try to sing it. uh huh. hahaha. yea, the second link which is not hyperlinked, is a download of ching a ring chaw, you can download it and listen and learn it. it can come into handy some day. hahaha. oh oh, the last song is hine ma tov, remeber that we learnt this song by ourselves? it's a great accomplishment! hahaha. so, i think a total of 6 songs would be enough right? hahaha.

TIPS: You can ask one another for help, doesn't mean leaders have to do everything. I presume that you should care about each other enough that all choir members are contactable through some kind of connection. Example, A has B's number, B has C's number, etc., until everyone is connected.

PS: This is a nice song that trains your sense of groove and rhythm. And it teaches that "Isolation" is not good for you. :) Enjoy!

Dear Choir,

Since CCA has come to a temporary stop, I would like to remind all of you, including those of you who hold committee positions and leadership role, to put down your roles and responsibilities. Now all of you are back to schoolmates relationship, and I am sure, some of you have built closer friendship with one another, and will help each other beyond choir matters.

During choir time, besides learning how to sing and improve your singing, you also learn role play of leaders and followers, and cultivate spirit of team work. Leaders learn how to deliver clear instructions, and followers learn to obey and carry out instructions as smartly as possible. ENJOY this team learning process and PLAY your role well. Choir is the only time you get this chance. After choir, everything is back to normal schoolmates relationship. Remember, all problems can be solved nicely, don't be rash!
Whatever I am going to type below may be difficult for some of you to understand. You can ask your parents or your teachers to explain to you. If they also don't understand, then you tell me next time we meet. Hehehe!

Guidelines for Leaders
It is sometimes necessary for leaders to use a strict delivery of command and control to instill discipline and alertness in the choir. Followers at this point in time, need to quickly focus and respect leaders' demand of attention. To those who fail to cooperate, leaders need to do something such as give punishments or scoldings (NOT bully), or explain why you demand certain things. From time to time, leaders need to engage the help of the teachers or choir instructor for problems they don't know how to solve. Leaders must always remind themselves to uphold integrity with their entrusted authority, and to treat each member of the team EQUALLY. Most importantly, LOVE your team, LOVE your members, and KEEP CALM when you encounter problems! You have experienced teachers and instructor to guide and help you, ok?

Guidelines for Followers
Do not take any scoldings and punishments personally. Just Do It! Followers must remember that besides learning how to be good and smart follower, you are also helping your leaders to learn to be better leaders. So if there's anything you disagree, or find your leader's message confusing, GENTLY remind them. Together with your team mates, you can always discuss with your leaders for better solutions. Understand that sometimes there can be many different opinions, that's NORMAL, so don't panic, don't be upset! Respect each other no matter what, and ask your teachers or choir instructor to help you solve the problems. Understand that it's VERY HARD to be leaders, so give each other chance, and give your support as much as possible to your leaders.

During Choir Training
All leaders and followers role play STOP during choir training unless I ask the section leaders to lead their section. All of you become choir singers and your spirit and passion should be up and high to make music together. Sometimes I give difficult or uninteresting training, and the choir can get demoralised or unmotivated or tired. Cheer each other up, continue to encourage one another. Some "suffering" is good for you. ;)

You can take this break, to reflect what you have learned, and how you can improve yourself in the future. Seniors are role models for juniors, and juniors very soon will be seniors next year.

Dear choir,

I have mentioned the importance of holding/sustaining the vowels ( a, e, ay, i, O(r), o(h), u, etc. ) with the right pure tone, and not allow the consonants ( b, c, ch, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, sh, t, th, v, w, x, z ) to distract/disturb the shape or sound of the vowels.

Sometimes, you may hear some choirs muffle / blur the consonants in order to maintain the good sound of their vowels. The choir will naturally sound good this way, but it is not ideal. The audience is not sure what they are singing, they will then focus only on good sound.

That's a good example of good tone, good shape and good sustain of vowels, + good diction (clear consonants).

Continue to listen to the choir (young adults choir - age 17 and above), and if you can hear clearly their lyrics, means, they put in effort to sing with clear diction. It takes more effort for the choir to sing with clear diction, because they have to start the consonant and end the consonant at exactly the same time.

I have finished teaching "The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls". Take the score, look at the dynamics (loud, soft, getting louder, getting softer, etc.) while listening to the mp3.

Next Wednesday, I will work again on The Tide Rises The Tide Falls, E Oru O, An African Wish, and Ching A Ring Chaw.

anway, long time no update right, haha. so, here i am.
i'm sure all of us enjoy choir camp right? haha. well, i did. haha.

hmwk plus hmwk. screw me. haha. i remember the last day of camp, ms hsuan taught us alot of things, but was so physically tired. awwh. haha.

Dear AES Choir,

I was trying to look for "E Oru O" on the internet for some nice clips. I am amazed that your performances are on youtube!

Because of the noise during recording, many mistakes are not obvious. Anyway, let me test the choir's ability to recognize the obvious mistake.

Exercise 1: (E Oru O - Identify Mistake)

The whole choir was pushed sharper by the sopranos during the E Oru O performance, and from then on, it just went sharper and sharper. So basses, tenors and altos were all adjusting GRADUALLY to the sharpened sopranos.

Question: At which point, the sopranos started to go sharp?

Exercise 2: (E Oru O - Listen to Effect of Accurate Intervals/Harmonies)

I managed to find an adult choir singing E Oru O. Because of copyright issue, the song is not complete. This is the mp3: "E Oru O (A Yoruba Greeting) - Rosephanye Powell.mp3".

Their performance has good contrast of dynamics (loud and soft) but with more subdued energy (controlled energy and volume, maybe they want to slowly build up the energy to release 100% of them at the end of the music). They pay careful attention to harmonies and the result is very nice.

Listen to the mp3, pay attention to the overall effects of accurate interval formations produced by this adult choir.

You can use this mp3 to compare with your own performance, and find answer to Exercise 1.

Exercise 3: (E Oru O - Listen, Watch & Learn)

I want you to LISTEN and WATCH the following performance, this is another version of E Oru O, no harmony parts, all unison. Observe their performance. Their movements are very simple, but effective, because each and everyone of them gives 100% of their energy and dedication to their performance.

For the next performance, we can start with this tune, then follow it up with the choir version of E Oru O.

Personal comment: I don't know why this choir is called children's choir, they don't sound children to me. In fact, the guys/boys in AES choir will sound the same if they could sing as confidently as this "children's choir". There are only 11 of them, but their performance is full of energy! This is the energy I want from the choir when you sing uplifting songs like E Oru O, Fire, and Ching A Ring Chaw.

Exercise 4: (Liza - Learn, Listen to Effect of Clean & Tidy Intervals/Harmonies)

I sent an email a while ago, to do 2 exercises. Let me remind you again.

Listen to Liza, sing along your own parts. Remember, Altos & Sopranos must learn both the melody and the harmony. Pay attention to their choral effect, notice that their harmonies / interval formations are very CLEAN and TIDY. This is because their rhythms (time distance between notes, and which notes fall on which beats) are accurate.

Exercise 5: (Hine Ma Tov - Identify Interval, Listen to Effect of Accurate Intervals/Harmonies)

Listen again to Hine Ma Tov, listen to the last note of 3rd melody line. Identify the split, what is that interval?

Choices: minor 3rd, major 3rd, perfect 4th, perfect 5th, minor 6th, major 6th

Continue to listen to the whole song. Listen to the canon (different section sings different melody lines), pay attention to the effect of accurate harmonies (interval formations). When the choir resumes practice, we'll work on the canon part, and we'll work to achieve this standard.

speech day is an unforgettable event. it was the first performance we put up and receive so many comments. most importantly, they are good comments. when i say good, it's super. i love choir! we are improving. see the bold word? hahaha. choir choir! gambate! let us prosper. hahaha. because of the great effort, you guys are getting a great reward by having a choir camp. it's so going to be fun. but you guys have to look forward and be enthu alright! let us feel that you all are looking forward for the camp so we can have many many fun events coming up for you guys! yay!

The reason I don't buy this song, is because I don't have operatic-sounding singer in the choir who can do vibrato to present this song.

TIGER! TIGER!

This tiger song is an easy song, but very difficult to sound good and catch the audience attention throughout. This choir didn't showcase too much variety in their dynamics. But please take a listen to their unison and harmony, they blend very well, there's no one sticking out. Sopranos, altos and baritones are very distinct. I will purchase another tiger song, same lyrics, the music is more artistic and beautiful, and the harmony is richer, which means, more difficult.

This song is difficult to teach, especially to the sections that are not singing melody. I challenge the entire choir to figure out all other parts (except the melody) from this song. I am sure most of you would be singing the melody instead.

Choir is performing for the CNY's celebration at Vincent hall on the 6th Feb 2008.

choir, we are gonna give our best on our performance.

I am confidence and sure that we will be able to do our best.

Through the past few practices, i can see that we are all looking forward to the performance.
